Do I Need a Prescription?
Understanding US federal laws for purchasing non-corrective (Plano) and corrective theatrical contact lenses safely.
Yes! All Contact Lenses Require a Prescription in the USA
Under United States federal law and FDA regulations, ALL contact lenses are classified as medical devices. This means that a valid prescription from an eye care professional is legally required to purchase any contact lenses, including non-corrective (Plano/0.00) Halloween, cosplay, and beauty lenses.
There is a dangerous misconception that cosmetic contact lenses are “one size fits all.” In reality, an improper fit can cause severe damage to your eyes, including corneal abrasions and infections. Your eye doctor must measure your eye’s base curve (BC) and diameter (DIA) to ensure you can wear theatrical lenses safely.
The Gothika® Verification Process (Fast & Easy!)
We know that dealing with prescriptions can feel like a hassle, so we have streamlined the process to make it as fast and automated as possible:
-
Place Your Order: Add your favorite lenses to your cart and complete your checkout normally.
-
Provide Your Doctor’s Info: After checkout, you will receive a secure link via email to finalize your order. Simply enter your eye doctor’s name and contact information.
-
We Do the Work: Our automated system (VerifyMyLenses) will instantly fax or email a verification request directly to your doctor.
-
The 8-Hour Rule: Under the FTC’s Contact Lens Rule, your eye doctor has exactly 8 business hours to respond to our request. If they do not respond within those 8 business hours, your prescription is legally considered verified, and your order ships immediately!
Never Worn Contact Lenses Before?
If you have never worn contacts, you must visit an optometrist or ophthalmologist for a comprehensive eye exam and a contact lens fitting. When you visit, simply let them know you intend to wear theatrical or cosmetic lenses so they can ensure your eyes are healthy enough for standard lens dimensions.

A: Yes! Even if you have perfect vision and are ordering non-corrective (Plano/0.00) lenses, federal law requires an eye doctor to verify that the base curve and diameter of the lens will fit your eye safely.
A: Yes! If you have a physical copy of a valid, unexpired contact lens prescription, you can often upload it or email it directly to our support team to bypass the doctor verification wait time entirely.
